The true test of an algorithmic or quantitative trading system does not happen when it is printing money during a macro trend. It happens when the system enters a drawdown. Drawdowns are not an anomaly; they are a mathematical certainty. If your strategy has a 60% win rate, variance dictates that you will eventually face a sequence of consecutive losses that tests your capital constraints—and your psychological sanity.
